Who We Are
In the autumn of 2014, a Maryland Athletic Club (MAC) member and Kung Fu enthusiast Tanya Davis proposed offering a short-term, weekly class for the children of MAC members who were interested in an introduction to martial arts. By spring of the following year, the original four class members had worked their way to intermediate status and had new classmates with each new six-week session. By its second anniversary, the Kung Fu “class” at the MAC was up to three days a week and included separate classes for intermediates, self-defense training and weapons.
The MAC’s Kung Fu program became Three Branches Kung Fu School shortly before the United States Kuo Shu Federation National tournament in 2017. Most sessions have 15 to 20 students, and two of the original four students are testing to receive their black sashes by the end of 2019.
One-hour, beginner classes are on Mondays at 5:45p and Sundays at 9:30a. Cost per 12-class, six week session is $120 for members of MAC Harbor East gym and $150 for non-members. There’s a $30 discount for each additional family member. Starting age is 5 years old.
Three Branches offers instruction in the Northern Shaolin Kung Fu style of Tien Shan Pai. Mastery of eight forms (and one tournament competition) is required to earn the school’s black sash, including at least one weapon form and one two-person form. Students test for promotion after a minimum time at each level.
